Trust the Gut or the Brain…

Have you ever been in a situation where you don’t know whether to listen to your brain or your gut? Have you ever regretted a decision you made because it was based off of the facts? A recent article in O, The Oprah Magazine delves into the human psyche and gives us some tips on when it is good to use the gut for decision making and when we should use the brain.

By SimonDoggett

The doctors that consulted in the magazine agree that we should use our gut feelings as a decision making tool when:

You are doing something that you are experienced in. Our gut feelings or “intuition” is based off of our learned experiences, so it is better to give into these feelings when we are put into those types of situations.

Considering getting a second opinion. Listening to what your body is telling you can sometimes be better than listening to what the doctor has to say.

Shopping for a home. When shopping for big ticket items it is better to incorporate how you feel about the decision internally rather than solely base the decision off of numbers.

They decided that you should use your head when:

Sniffing out a lie. You can’t judge a book by its cover, so if you sense someone is lying about something you have to back it up with the facts.

Hiring someone for a job. Don’t solely base your next hire off of how you feel about them. The feeling needs to be backed up with the experience.

No matter the situation you will know what to do, just trust the ultimate decision maker…your heart.

Protein Boost

protein-allanza jpgEver feel like you could eat a horse? Never feel like you are satisfied after eating? An article on health.com sheds light on how to feel satisfied after eating a meal.

By RandyA38

The first thing you should look at is your diet. A lot of times we are lacking in one area in the nutritional triangle than others. Protein and fiber is actually on big key in feeling completely satisfied after a meal. This means you need to start filling your diets with more protein and fiber rich foods. There are a couple of suggestions that might help you achieve this goal.

Round Out Your Meals

Make sure your meals are well balanced and contain the proper amount of protein, carbohydrate, and vegetables. If they don’t that could be a primary reason that you don’t feel satisfied. Make sure you are including protein and fat at every meal (no more low-fat salads for lunch) in order to curb your cravings.

Turn to Tofu

I know most of you either haven’t tried tofu or do not like it, but it is full of healthy proteins. But if Tofu really is not your thing then the article suggest that you can incorporate more beans, legumes, egg whites, soymilk and other grains into your personal diets.

Experiment

Do not be afraid to experiment with your body when it comes to food. Only you know what you need to fuel it. But a little healthy reminder is to always incorporate the right amount of protein and fat into your meals because those are the things that will hold you over until the next time you eat.

flowerToday, I decided would be a do-over day.  I’m starting anew and recommitting myself to myself to do the things that are best for me.  Now sometimes these things are not fun, but necessary – like I got up this morning at 5am so that I can go to the gym(I am NOT a morning person) but somehow, it felt right and good to be doing this for myself.  And I’m taking it slow, I won’t do this everyday, I’m thinking 2-3 a week with other activities in between.  I don’t think that resolutions should be made just at New Year’s.  Everyday, if we think about it, should be days that we are resolved to do and be the best people that we can be.  And if we miss the mark one day, we have the next to be resolved again to do better.  No longer will the beginning of the year be the only time I evaluate and set my accomplishments.  Each day of my week now begins with New Monday’s Resolution, New Tuesday’s Resolution, New Wednesday’s Resolution……

Have ‘Two Days’ to get away to ‘Two Lakes’? If so, Hoosier National Forest may be the weekend getaway for you.

At 15.7 miles, this trail is designated a National Recreation Trail. Hiking is its most popular use with special features including shaded trails, scenic hardwood forest, beautiful views of Indian and Celina Lakes.

The main trail is marked in white, with spur trails marked in orange to offer short, day hikes. Much of this trail is on steep slopes and could take 4-5 hours to hike half the distance. Along the trail’s routes, wildlife openings are maintained where deer, turkey, quail, and songbirds are commonly seen. One of the Hoosier’s Watchable Wildlife areas are along this trail.
